Career goal achieved by local ex-professional footballer turned Financial Adviser

Back in August 2016, Thomas Williams, ex-Tranmere Rovers FC professional, joined Chester-based Chartered Independent Financial Adviser firm Innes Reid, as a Financial Services Trainee/Apprentice.

Fast forward to 4 years and 7 exams later – and Thomas has scored a Level 4 Diploma in Professional Financial Services, achieving his goal in becoming one of the youngest Independent Financial Advisers in the UK at age 22.

Managing Director of Innes Reid, Mark Reidford APFS, spotted the potential in Thomas at age 18, seeing ‘a strong set of life skills and a maturity beyond his years’. Mark recruited Thomas to join the firm’s intensive training programme to enable him to transfer his skills to the office environment and have a clear-cut career path in finance.

Being a keen team player, Thomas has moved through the ranks from Office Junior to Administrator to Paraplanner and now Independent Financial Adviser (IFA), shadowing his fellow Advisers at work by day and studying at home by night.

I have been studying and learning on the job – it’s been hard work but worth it now I’m fully qualified and looking forward to supporting our clients to achieve their financial goals.

Shadowing Mark (Reidford) has propelled my career growth and I’ve learned so much from him and the other long-established Advisers at Innes Reid. Mark founded Innes Reid 20 years ago and has shaped it into the award-winning, Chartered firm it is today.

Being an IFA is a very fast-paced role in an ever-changing global market place. At Innes Reid, everything is completely client-focused, so it’s important to be able to adapt to meet their needs whilst keeping up to date with changes to the economic climate”, enthused Thomas.

Mark Reidford, MD said:

I’m impressed that Thomas has shown such dedication to his career and his studies over the last 4 years. He’s very driven and focused and is already a great asset to our successful team of Independent Financial Advisers and supporting staff here in Chester.

Don’t think it’s all over however, as there’s extra time ahead for Thomas, who explained:

Although I am now fully qualified and confident in giving financial advice to clients on their pensions and investments, I am continuing my studies to become a Chartered Financial Planner. Only around 10% of Financial Advisers in the UK have achieved Chartered status, which includes 5 Advisers at Innes Reid.

I am keen to support younger people by creating a clear financial plan for their future. Many people don’t consider a pension or investments until later in life and yet there’s so many benefits to getting good financial advice and into good habits as soon as they begin their career. I am also keen to work with sportsmen and women, as it’s a profession I can relate to.
